Splitting Signals

Passive optic network (PON) technology allows high-bandwidth optoelectronics to feed out into a single fibre. This bandwidth can then be made available to multiple customers by splitting the light signal (using purely passive devices) in a tree-and-branch topology so that 16, 32, 64 or even more customers can be served from one active equipment port.

This splitting can take place at the CO, or deep into the access network to achieve maximum cost efficiency.
